K Jayaraman is admitted to practice law in New York, Tennessee and in Delhi (India). He is a former law professor at the University of Memphis School of law. He has extensive experience in Criminal, Civil, and Immigration litigation and has won several cases, jury awards and federal and state appeals. Several of his federal cases have been recommended for full text publication by the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He has argued more than 25 appeals in federal courts of appeals and represented innumerable clients before the United States Court of Appeals and U.S District Courts.
He briefed and argued a seminal constitutional case on constitutionality of the federal Three Strikes law in 2000, before the en banc court of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. (USA v. Gatewood). A three judge panel of the Court had unanimously struck down the statute as unconstitutional, however, the en banc Court reversed the ruling.
Another case he won before the U.S Court of Appeals, U.S.A v. Casenyle Valentine is a leading case in the area of grouping of counts in federal sentencing.
He obtained a large jury verdict in a leading legal malpractice case against Willie Gary and his law firm, who was featured on CBS' Sixty minutes as a leading trial lawyer in the U.S. The case was subsequently settled for an undisclosed amount in favor of Mr. Jayaraman's client Antonio Tuggle.
Mr. Jayaraman has represented scores of clients in federal courts charged with offenses ranging from white collar crimes, bank robbery and major drug offenses. He has won several jury trials, and obtained dismissals or acquitals involving trials and motions to suppress. The cases tried include cases involving first degreee murder, telemarketing fraud, major drug offenses, gun offenses etc.
Other areas he handled invlove international extradition, international fraud and cases involving representation of international companies who were victims of fraud in the U.S. in international transactions. He has obtained large civil judgments in fraud cases including cases involving international fraud.
His book "Legal Regime of Islands" is one of the few publications on delimitation of maritime boundaries involving islands and island nations.
He has a PhD degree in law from the International Legal Studies Division of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and an LL.M from Tulane Law School, New Orleans, LA, apart from his Law degree and two other Masters degrees one in English Language and Literature and the other in international law. He has lectured in various universities on different subjects involving international law.
